Shantideva, Confession, and the Infinite Lifestyle

In this episode, Bob continues his exploration of Shantideva’s Guide to the Bodhisattva’s Way of Life, moving deeper into the “Confession” chapter — though what unfolds is far more than confession in the conventional sense.

What emerges is a profound meditation on reality itself.

Bob frames Shantideva’s teachings through what he calls the difference between the “terminal lifestyle” and the “infinite lifestyle.” The terminal lifestyle is the modern belief that consciousness is accidental, temporary, and ultimately meaningless — that we are isolated biological events destined for annihilation. He suggests that much of the violence, despair, ecological destruction, and spiritual numbness of our age grows from this assumption.

Against this, Shantideva offers another vision:

That life is not meaningless.
That consciousness does not emerge from nothing.
That reality is profoundly relational, interconnected, and alive.

And from this realization arises bodhicitta — the enlightening spirit — the awakening of infinite compassion and responsibility for all beings.

Bob reflects on the radical implications of this view:

If existence is infinite…
if consciousness continues…
if every action ripples outward endlessly…
then even the smallest act of kindness matters.

So does every act of cruelty.

In Shantideva’s confession practice, we are not confessing before a wrathful authority demanding punishment. We are simply becoming honest about the ways we have misunderstood reality and caused suffering — to ourselves and others. The point is not guilt. The point is awakening.

One of the most striking themes in this talk is Bob’s insistence that Buddhism is ultimately a form of radical realism.

“Trust reality,” he says.

Not authoritarian systems.
Not fear-based worldviews.
Not the modern mythology of meaninglessness.

Reality itself.

Again and again, Bob returns to the idea that the universe is not empty of care or intelligence, but filled with awakened beings — Buddhas, bodhisattvas, protectors, teachers, loving presences — visible and invisible — working continuously for the liberation of suffering beings.

The practice of refuge, then, is not passive belief.

It is choosing to align ourselves with compassion rather than fear.
With interconnectedness rather than alienation.
With wisdom rather than despair.

The chapter also turns toward impermanence and death — not as nihilism, but as urgency.

Shantideva reminds us that life is fleeting. Death can come unexpectedly. Wealth, status, possessions, and identity dissolve like dreams. Yet this recognition is not meant to frighten us into hopelessness. It is meant to wake us up into immediacy.

The infinite lifestyle is not abstract philosophy.

It is lived now.
In this moment.
In how we treat others.
In how we relate to the Earth.
In whether we deepen fear or deepen love.

Toward the end of the teaching, Bob beautifully reframes the purpose of spiritual life itself:

Not domination.
Not superiority.
Not escape.

But becoming capable of helping others discover their own innate possibility, dignity, intelligence, and freedom.

That is the heart of bodhicitta.

And perhaps why Shantideva’s teachings remain so urgently relevant today.

“Reality is where you are. You’re held by it. You can’t avoid it. It is you.” — Tenzin Bob Thurman

Get more from Robert Thurman in the Substack app

Available for iOS and Android

Get the app

Live Q&A with TBob Thurman

A recording from Robert Thurman's live video

Robert Thurman

What great fun diving deep with all of you. My role, as I understand it, is not to give up on the possibility that human beings—even the most misguided—can change.

That doesn’t mean we ignore injustice. It means we meet it with clarity, responsibility, and a refusal to let hatred take root in our own minds.

We are all on the front lines. The real question is whether we stand on the line of anger—or the line of love.

Subscribe now

The Sixth Dalai Lama: Love, Power, and a Vision of Another Tibet

In this little reading, I wanted to share a moment from The Magical Adventures of the Sixth Dalai Lama—a scene that captures something quite extraordinary about this remarkable young figure.

Robert Thurman

In this little reading, I wanted to share a moment from The Magical Adventures of the Sixth Dalai Lama—a scene that captures something quite extraordinary about this remarkable young figure.

Here we find a powerful Mongolian queen, fierce and politically astute, entering with her own intentions—perhaps to seduce, perhaps to dominate, perhaps simply to test this unconventional Dalai Lama who refuses to behave as expected. And yet, instead of meeting resistance, she encounters stillness… a kind of presence that begins to disarm her.

What unfolds is not merely a personal encounter, but a visionary one. The boundaries between meditation, desire, and political reality begin to dissolve. She is drawn into a vision of possible futures—of Tibet as it was, and as it might have been.

You see, the Sixth Dalai Lama was not content to remain within the purely monastic role. He had a different idea—one might even say a daring one—that Tibet could become a true kingdom, capable of protecting itself amidst the great powers surrounding it. Whether this was historical intention or later interpretation, we leave open. But the drama of that possibility is very real.

And Annie Bien, my co-author, brings these moments to life in such a vivid, almost cinematic way—where inner experience and outer history become inseparable.

So I invite you to listen, and to enter that world a little. It’s not only about Tibet in the 17th century. It’s about how vision itself—our capacity to imagine, to desire, to perceive—shapes the reality we live in.

I think you’ll enjoy it.

To purchase a copy of The Magical Adventures of the Sixth Dalai Lama, please visit the Tibet House US website.
